Ladies, Prioritize Your Pelvic Health

To say that I didn’t know much about the pelvic floor and the importance of it before I started working at Nesin is a bit of an understatement.  I didn’t know much about my body in general actually, but that’s another subject for another blog!  I tend not to make New Year’s resolutions, as they usually don’t last past the month of January, but in 2023 I’ve decided to put my health first.

  

As a woman, I tend to put the needs of others above my own: family, friends, work, even pets.  But there are certain things I make a regular priority: yearly physical, dentist, my annual OB-GYN appointment, mammogram (as I’m of that age), etc.  But as a woman I’m told by society that certain things are “normal” as we age or because we’ve had kids.  Things like incontinence, organ prolapse, and pain with sex are normalized by products you see on television, society, even friends who are trying to help but may not know better.  

 

Does this sound familiar?  “Oh yeah, it’s normal to pee a little when you jump, cough or sneeze after you had kid(s)…happens to me all the time.”  Guess what?  That’s actually NOT normal at all.  It’s common, obviously, but not normal.  That’s just what we’ve been led to believe.  And what about those women out there – maybe you’re one of them reading this right now – who have pain during intercourse?  Guess what?  You don’t have to live with a pain-filled sex life!  

 

So for a little education moment, your pelvic floor has five important functions: 

 

  1. Organ support

The pelvic floor muscles support our bladder, uterus, rectum, and important abdominal organs against gravity and any added downward pressure.

 

  1. Stability

The pelvic floor is one of four muscles making up our inner ‘core’, which stabilizes our pelvis and lower back.

 

  1. Sphincteric function

These are the muscles which control both the opening of the urethra, where urine comes out, and rectum, where feces and/or gas come out. The pelvic floor muscles prevent leakage of urine, feces and gas.

 

  1. Sexual Function

The pelvic floor plays a role in orgasm but can also cause painful intercourse.

 

  1. Circulation

The pelvic floor muscles act as a ‘sump pump’ to pump blood back up towards the heart.
